Sergino Dest believes that the US Men’s National Team can achieve something more in the upcoming World Cup.
Sergino Dest signed for FC Barcelona from Dutch capital club Ajax in early October. The 19-year-old signs a contract until the 2024/25 season with the Catalan club.
The operation cost is 21 million euros, along with five million euros in variables, and the buyout clause is set at 400 million euros.
However, other clubs wanted Dest to be a part of their team. Bayern Munich made a similar offer to Ajax to pursue the young American’s purchase back, but Dest was sure of the club that he wanted to join.
The American winger trains with the club’s first team and gets called up for league matches as a substitute.
However, Dest is the first-ever United States international to make a La Liga appearance for FC Barcelona. He became so after being brought on as a substitute in a draw in La Liga against the current Europa League champions Sevilla.
Dest says he’s proud to be the first American in the Barca team. He wants to win “big things” with the club. Moreover, Dest noted that he likes challenges. However, he doesn’t speak nor understands Spanish for now.
Nevertheless, he expresses how glad he is to be playing alongside one of the world’s best players, including his childhood and current idol, Lionel Messi.
The ‘American dream‘
After failing to qualify for the last version of the FIFA World Cup held in Russia, the United States Men’s National Team is desperate to play good in the next World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
Sergino Dest says that he and the whole team feel the excitement about the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Dest believes that they can achieve “something” in the forthcoming FIFA World Cups since many players play the “big clubs.”
As fans can agree, they do have a young squad with many potentials. With the likes of Christian Pulisic of Chelsea FC, Weston McKennie of Juventus, and Giovanni Reyna of Borussia Dortmund, the USMNT has a lot to show.
The boys will all be entering their primes during the next World Cup tournaments. Dest also added Konrad De La Fuente, his current Barcelona teammate, and former roommate during the U20 World Cup.
The primary goal is to qualify for the 2022 finals. Dest believes that if everyone is hungry enough and work hard as a team, everything is achievable.
Further, Dest adds how the USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter has plans with the young players like him for the 2026 World Cup.
