Sex Education season 3 joined an increasing number of British shows affected by the UK government-mandated lockdown. This could result in the postponement of the Netflix show’s return next year.
Netflix initially scheduled the show’s Wales production to begin in May. But the strict social distancing and lockdown measures set by the UK government rendered the plan impossible.
Streaming audiences eagerly look forward to Sex Education season 3. Since its debut, the show has grown to be one of the most successful shows on the streaming service. In fact, the show reportedly hit more than 40 million viewers within its first month on the platform.
The Netflix show tells the story of teenagers who earn money giving out sex tips in their high school. It stars Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, and Ncuti Gatwa as the show’s lead trio.
According to a report, the second season received even more critical and audience acclaim. It received acclaim for tackling issues like reproductive health and sexual harassment without losing its comedic identity. The bus scene in the second season’s seventh episode gained a lot of praise because of its portrayal of sisterhood.
Right now, it looks like all members of the show’s ensemble cast will return for the third season. This includes Gillian Anderson, who plays Dr. Jean Millburn.
Anderson arguably has the busiest schedule among the series’ cast. Last year, she signed on to play Margaret Thatcher on The Crown season 4. Fortunately, the X-Files actress finished filming her scenes for the period drama before the lockdown.
The streaming service previously set the premiere of Sex Education season 3 in the first quarter of 2021. Because of the production delay, fans might have to wait a bit longer to see the next season.
Sex Education season 3 is not the only British television show affected by the COVID-19 lockdown. As the number of UK COVID-19 cases continues to grow, production companies have suspended filming until after the lockdown period.
Another Netflix production, The Witcher, had to temporarily pack up production on its second season. Reports say the streamer is already working on ways to resume production without violating lockdown rules.
Last week, the UK government announced the extension of the lockdown for at least three more weeks. The Conservative-led administration hopes that the extension will result in the decline of COVID-19 cases in the country.
