‘Shaman King’ returns in anime reboot to drop in April 2021

Hiroyuki Takei’s Shaman King has announced an anime reboot in the works. The brand-new anime series will premiere in April 2021.

The popular anime show Shaman King is returning to the world of anime. The official website of the anime franchise posted:

“It is the King of Stars who controls all things in the forest. People who can interact with gods and spirits are called Shamans. Every 500 years, they compete for the position in Sherman Fight. One of the shamans, Asakura Aoba, battles for the Shaman King. In April 2021, it will start as a completely new animation.”

More about the reboot

Reportedly, the upcoming anime reboot is set to adapt all 35 volumes of Hiroyuki Takei’s Shaman King manga. The new series will be completely different from when it was adapted into an anime in 2001.

The previous show eventually deviated from the manga’s storyline as the chapters were still being serialized. This resulted in a completely different ending. However, this time, the anime is going to be completely faithful to the original manga storyline.

Hiroyuki Takei previously refused a Shaman King reboot

The reboot is big news for the Shaman King devotees as Hiroyuki Takei once turned down the option of a remake in 2017. His refusal to work on the project was out of respect for not being able to involve the original voice actors.

He previously stated:

“To tell the truth, there was an offer for an anime remake that reached a realistic level. But because they were not able to use the first anime’s voice actors and soundtrack music, I had to turn it down. I hope there will be another chance.”

With this statement, fans can conclude that Takei’s apparent change of heart suggests the original cast is back for the ride.

More about the original Shaman King anime series

The original Shaman King anime was adapted from the Weekly Shonen Jump manga that ran from 1998 to 2004. The anime only ran for 64 episodes between 2001 and 2002. Because the anime subsequently ended its run long before the manga did, huge swathes of the manga were never even adapted, leaving fans disappointed.

Shaman King plot

Shaman King follows the story of the 13 year-old shaman Yoh Asakura. Shamans are  medium between the two worlds, the living and the dead.

Yoh seeks to become the Shaman King, the one who is able to contact the Great Spirit. In this way, he will gain the ability to reshape the world in any way he wishes.

In order to become what he strives for, Yoh must win the Shaman Fight, a battle held once every 500 years between competing shamans.
