Sherlock is celebrating 10 years with a new video from creator and co-star Mark Gatiss. The series, which made Benedict Cumberbatch a major star, debuted on the small screen on July 25, 2010.
As a gift to the loyal fans of Sherlock, Gatiss recorded a video as Mycroft Holmes, the older brother of Sherlock Holmes (Cumberbatch). Gatiss, while in character, said that it was a mistake to have his brother’s adventures on screen for 10 years, but he acknowledges that the guy playing Mycroft is a handsome man.
Gatiss also said that he could not understand why people “vegetate on the sofa” to watch Sherlock. He ended the video in true to form, by telling the viewers to “go away” in his classic Mycroft delivery.

The actor’s video was meant for Youku, the Chinese streaming platform that continues to air Sherlock. Gatiss also spent time on Twitter answering questions from global fans in honor of the show’s 10th anniversary.
Hello! In honour of the 10th anniversary of #Sherlock, Steven and I will answer a chosen 10 questions generated by this tweet, and we’ll put up our answers here later (hopefully!) in video form. The Game is (briefly) on!

Gatiss hints on a “Chapter Two”
In 2017, Gatiss confirmed that there would be no more Sherlock season 5 via a post on social media. But the creator also hinted that the series might be revived at some point as Sherlock Chapter Two.
Gatiss said that the show’s main characters have evolved after four seasons. If they do make a follow-up, then it will be a slightly different story but with, hopefully, the same lead stars.
Freeman is still interested in reviving Watson
The movie careers of Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman (John Watson) took off after a few seasons of Sherlock. Both are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have also done other blockbuster hits, thus their busy work schedules.
Freeman said in an interview with Collider in August 2019 that there have been “few and far between” talks about bringing the series back. However, he’s willing to play Watson again if the story is “really meaty” and interesting.
But last November 2019, Gatiss said in an interview with Radio Times that there are no immediate plans to revisit the series. As co-creator and co-writer with Steven Moffat, Gatiss confirmed that Sherlock is no longer their priority.
Netflix revives the spirit of Sherlock with Enola Holmes
Meanwhile, Netflix has an upcoming movie made in the vein of Sherlock. Enola Holmes stars Millie Bobby Brown as the youngest sister of Sherlock and Mycroft, who also has sleuthing skills.
In the film, Sherlock is played by Henry Cavill while Mycroft is played by Sam Claflin. The movie is based on the books from Nancy Springer and has no connection to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work. The streaming platform plans to screen the movie in September, pending a lawsuit from Conan Doyle’s estate.
