Another Sherlock Holmes production is coming to Netflix following the success of the movie Enola Holmes. The Irregulars will drop on the streaming platform in 2021, and it will come with an interesting twist.
The Irregulars is also based on the creations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes novels. But the focus of the show isn’t on the iconic detective and his sidekick Dr. John Watson.
The drama will be about the Baker Street Irregulars, a group of street outcasts and strays who have been helping Holmes and Watson in their cases in the original source materials. They work in the background and are not often credited for their contribution.
However, the series will apparently have supernatural elements and a dark theme, per the show’s synopsis.
What is this Netflix show about?
Creating The Irregulars for Netflix is an Oscar-nominated scribe, Tom Bidwell.
“Our series is — what if Sherlock was a drug addict and a delinquent and the kids solve the whole case whilst he takes credit?” Bidwell shared in an interview with Digital Spy.
The writer said that he’s been pitching this story to studios in the last 10 years, and it was Netflix that gave it a go. He said that the streaming platform has been “incredibly supportive for our vision” while giving Bidwell the creative freedom to be “very ambitious” about where the show could go.
Who’s in the cast?
Playing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson on The Irregulars are British actors Henry Lloyd-Hughes (Killing Eve) and Royce Pierreson (Line of Duty). Also in the cast are the street urchins: Thaddea Graham (Us) as Bea, Darci Shaw (Judy) as Jessie, McKell David (Snatch) as Spike, and Jojo Macari (Sex Education) as Billy.
Clarke Peters (His Dark Materials) also joins the show as the Linen Man. Harrison Osterfield (Catch 22) will play Leopold, and Olivia Grant is Patricia Coleman-Jones.
Filming for the eight-episode series started in late 2019 around the U.K. until the production lockdown in March. Work on the set resumed in August, and the cast and crew were seen at the Ellesmere Port near Liverpool. Graham shared on her Instagram that principal photography wrapped up in mid-September.

Lloyd-Hughes shared that the penultimate episode of the first season is titled “Sherlock.” The actor hinted that his appearance on The Irregulars might be a one-season gig as he wrote that he’s said: “goodbye to this beast of a part.”
