It has been over three years since fans last saw Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) on the small screen. Now, fans are clamoring for Sherlock Season 5. Will it still happen?
A lot has been said about Sherlock Season 5, but nothing has come to fruition yet. As BBC has yet to cancel the show officially, there may still be hope that the much-loved guys from the Baker Street will return.
Teasing Sherlock Season 5 future
The fourth season officially ended on January 17, 2017. At the time, Sherlock and Watson managed to solve “The Final Problem.” But was it the final time that fans would see them?
In an interview with the series co-writer Steven Moffat, he said that the show would “unlikely” entirely disappear. It was the same thing that Mark Gatiss said in 2015.
“We’re all constantly thrilled and amazed by people’s enthusiasm for Sherlock,” Gatiss told Digital Spy in 2015. “We hope to carry on as long as we can.”
After Season 4 ended in January 2017, Moffat teased, “For those of you asking, it’s definitely the end — of Chapter One,”
“Whether we ever get to Chapter Two – our boys consciously living the myth and battling wrong-doers – rather depends on our two stars,” he added. “I’d be slightly surprised if we never made it again. But I’ve been surprised before.”

The hindrances that come in the new season’s way
Moffat has repeatedly said before that Sherlock Season 5 would be in the works. However, he had been busy with Doctor Who. Gatiss, too, was busy doing something else, making it the least of their priorities.
They hadn’t had the chance to properly talk about the new season, let alone plan what they would do with it. “There are no immediate plans,” Gatiss told Radio Times.
At the time, the two were busy making the TV adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Now that the BBC series already ended, would they finally have the time to do Sherlock Season 5?
“The ratings were extremely good, so I guess they’ll ask us [to do Sherlock] again,” Moffat explained, via Digital Spy. “Then we’ll have to see first of all if we have three films we want to make.”
Of course, they should also consider the schedule of its lead stars. “If Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman] have the time, schedule, and inclination,” Moffat added.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are both incredibly busy. In fact, Gatiss said that it’s hard to make their schedules meet. They even found it harder to do the previous installment due to their availabilities.
As the two stars’ IMDb pages noted that they are busy until 2022 and Moffat and Gatiss also have other projects, it remains to be seen if there will still be Sherlock Season 5.
