While appearing on The Late Late Show, host James Corden asked Goldberg why a third film never happened. Sister Act 1 and 2 came out in 1992 and 1993. Both became pop culture watercooler films and inspired many recreations at parties and competitions.
However, Goldberg said that studio producers told her no one would likely watch another movie.
“Then quite recently, it turns out, that that may not be true,” Goldberg said. “People might want to see it.”
The next morning on her TV show, The View, Goldberg once again discussed plans for Sister Act 3. She confirmed that they are trying to get the “gang” back together.
Golberg didn’t mention which cast members she was particularly discussing the sequel with. However, her nun friends in the movie consisted of Kathy Najimy (Sister Mary Patrick), Maggie Smith (Reverend Mother), and Wendy Makkena (Sister Mary Robert). In Sister Act 2, Sister Mary Clarence (Goldberg) mentored young kids, and this cast included Laurent Hill (Rita), Jennifer Love Hewitt (Margaret), and Ryan Toby (Ahmal).
By the end of the second movie, everyone who knew her as Sister Mary Clarence learned she’s actually Deloris Van Cartier, a Las Vegas lounge singer. It’s still unclear how she can pretend to be a nun again for Sister Act 3 as the writers and directors haven’t been picked.
The actress said that she felt the time is ripe for Sister Act 3 because the first two movies were fun stories that made viewers feel good. Goldberg also said no one got mad at the films despite some “bad singing, great singing and okay singing.”
But Goldberg will actually be starring in a Sister Act production. The London stage return of the musical at the Eventim Apollo will take place in the summer of 2021.
The production, which opened in February, had to shut down due to the pandemic. The actress said that she’s fine with the delay because it would be better to wait and “do everything safely” than to take the risk.
Goldberg co-stars with Jennifer Saunders as the Reverend Mother in this stage production. The musical was set for a limited 39 shows before the pandemic hit.
Meanwhile, Sister Act 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Disney+.
