Space Sweepers is considered South Korea’s first big-budget action epic set in space. Directed by Jo Sung-hee, the movie supposedly hit the big screen during the summer blockbuster season.
However, the coronavirus pandemic caused the movie to postpone until September.
With the resurgence of COVID-19 in South Korea, cinemas in the country are still ailing throughout the fall. With this, Netflix stepped in and acquired the worldwide streaming rights to the title.
Space Sweepers setting is in 2092. It takes place aboard one of the many vessels surviving on scavenged space debris called Victory.
The film stars K-drama favorite and The Battleship Island star Song Joong-Ki as the ship’s genius space pilot.
Also, the popular actress and The Handmaiden star, Kim Tae-Ri plays as a mysterious ex-pirate.
Moreover, Jin Sun-Kyu is a spaceship engineer in the movie, and Yoo Hai-jin is the reprogrammed military robot Bubs.
Victory’s crew then discovers a 7-year-old girl. She is inside a crashed space shuttle, which they successfully snatched in their latest debris chase.
They then realized that she’s the humanlike robot that the UTS Space Guards wanted. With this, they decide to demand a ransom.
The South Korean film company Merry Christmas primarily produced the film. China’s Huayi Tencent Entertainment also added financing for the film, and the Seoul-based Dexter Studios worked on its visual effects.
Furthermore, the movie was initially scheduled to premiere in the summer of 2020.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Space Sweepers’ release was canceled multiple times.
Netflix will now distribute the movie and will simultaneously premiere in 190 countries.
Meanwhile, the new poster released reveals the four main characters stand atop The Victory with confidence.
The center text reads, “A cleanup of space by those who’ve never been heard of or seen begins!”
