Sony apologizes for PlayStation 5 preorders fiasco

Share

Following the recent PlayStation 5 preorders fiasco, Sony is offering apologies. The move to put the console on sale without warning is chaos they don’t want.

During Sony’s recent announcement, the PlayStation 5 preorder opened a staggering wave of shortage of devices. Retailers received no warning that the preorders will start on the same day. This created undue chaos and console shortages.

Sony has now offered an apology and promised that fans haven’t missed out. There are more coming this year, and those who can’t preorder will still get the system.

Sony apologizes for chaos created by console preorder

On its official Twitter account, it reflected that its preorders “could have been a lot smoother.” Megastores across the US like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart sold out within minutes. Amazon even warns that they might miss launch day even if you preorder.

“Let’s be honest: PS5 preorders could have been a lot smoother. We truly apologize for that,” said the account. “Over the next few days, we will release more PS5 consoles for preorder – retailers will share more details. And more PS5s will be available through the end of the year.”

The issue was that Sony noted that preorders wouldn’t be available until the next day. They also assured key people in the industry that there are enough stocks for everyone. For some reason, these came out of the window.

In the hours that followed the announcement, the entire supply chain received overwhelming numbers. The pandemonium of customers rushing to preorder crashed sites like Gamestop.

Microsoft rides Sony mistakes

The PlayStation 5 preorders disappointed many fans. People from around the world who were asleep at the time felt left behind.

It didn’t help that Sony raffled out preorder options for several PSN accounts but failed to allocate some for them. Overnight, Sony sent PS5 preorder newsletters to those who signed up. This even happened hours after outlets were out of stock.

In contrast, Microsoft rode Sony’s mistake high and wide. They announced that the exact time for the preorder on the Xbox Series X and Series S. The dates are set on September 22, Tuesday 8 AM PT/11 AM ET.

Even if Microsoft sets a specific preorder time, it doesn’t mean everyone will get one. It only assures fans that everyone is on a level playing field.

A similar debacle to Sony also happened recently, with the release of the RTX 3080. Scalpers got a hold of dozens of orders and got some help from bot scripts to do their shopping.

PlayStation 5 preorders will launch on November 12. These will come two days after the launch of the Xbox Series X, which is on November 10.
