Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan claimed that the Playstation 5 will be the home of many more exclusives, more than any previous Sony console.
According to an interview with Nikkei, as translated by VGC, Sony is “quietly investing” in more Playstation 5 exclusives. Ryan assures that the PS5 will be home to more exclusives than any of their consoles throughout their near three-decade-long history.
Sony to add more exclusives in the years to come
During the fight of the next-gen consoles, Sony took an entirely different route than Microsoft. Xbox itself is working towards ubiquity, shedding itself of exclusives to add more titles. The Playstation, however, is working in the other direction.
Sony and the PS5 are trying to aim for more games exclusive to their platform. They promise to reward loyalty to the platform with more titles that only their players will have.
“We have been quietly but steadily investing in high-quality games for PlayStation, and we will make sure that the PS5 generation will have more dedicated software than ever before,” Ryan said. “We have repeatedly engaged in mergers and acquisitions, including Insomniac Games in the US. We will not rule out that option in the future.”
So far, the PS5 will have up to ten exclusives for 2021. Its titles slated for the year include Ghostwire: Tokyo, Deathloop, Kena: Bridge Of Spirits, and Stray. There’s also Goodbye Volcano High, Returnal, and even Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
Sony still dedicated to the Japanese market
The Playstation 5 has more upcoming exclusives for the platform. Even then, some of their titles are getting delays or still in early development.
For starters, Gran Turismo 7 is pushed back to 2022 due to “COVID-related production challenges” by Polyphony Digital. God of War Ragnarok is still in its early stages of development for the platform.
Naughty Dog, on the other hand, is busy with an upcoming remake of the original The Last of Us. Playstation also closed off Sony Japan Studio, their oldest and original first-party developer.
“It is important for us to provide software that fits the Japanese gaming community, and PS5 has included a lot of software from Japanese developers since its early stages,” Ryan noted.
“We will continue to strengthen our ties with Japanese developers and release content for PS5 that fits the Japanese market.”
Ryan also details why the PS5 is scarce on the market. Apart from scalpers, a big chunk of the problem comes from suppliers affected by the pandemic.
“There are several reasons why PS5 was hard to come by,” Ryan noted. “Supply under the new coronavirus was very complicated, and we had to limit distribution to online. The supply and demand for semiconductors is also tight worldwide. We are asking our suppliers to allow us to increase production, which will flow into the market this year.”
The Playstation 5, together with the Xbox, are early into their life cycles. Sony is looking forward to more titles on their platform.
