Space Jam 2 is happening and the 90’s kids are excited. It has been a long-time wait but things have finally set into place and now it’s really coming.
The news of a Space Jam 2 has surfaced for quite some time already. In fact, it was a subject of conversation back in 1997, a year after the film was released.
But it wasn’t until 2014 when things really got serious and the idea of a sequel was revived. The project started taking off and now, six years later, everyone is expectant of its release next year.
What is the title?
The sequel to the beloved 1996 live-action/animated sports comedy film is going to be called Space Jam: A New Legacy.
And as earlier reports have already revealed, NBA player LeBron James is going to be the one who will share the court with Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes character.
But if Michael Jordan were to choose who should lead the movie, he would go for a different NBA player.
As stated in Cinema Blend’s article, Jordan said that he prefers Detroit Pistons member Blake Griffin.
When is the release date?
Space Jam 2 is set to release in July 2021. And despite the pandemic, James said that the development of the movie is still on track. He revealed this during a guesting at “Road Trippin’ Podcast.”
He said that a lot of it right now is animation so production is mostly indoors. They also wrapped principal photography in September 2019, which means that the animated portions are left to work on.
Moreover, the film is being handled by Disney animation veteran Ton Bancroft. His works include Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Lion King.
He even directed the 1998 Mulan film which just goes to show that the Space Jam successor is really in good hands.
To direct the film is Malcom D. Lee. He is already the third choice to direct since the project was officially greenlit. Before him were directors Justin Lin and Terrence Nance.
But due to some issues, they had to make some changes, making Lee the final holder of the rein.
Who are the other cast members?
Joining James in the movie includes The Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green who is said to play the role of James’ wife.
Don Cheadle of Marvel’s War Machine is rumored to play the villain. And as tradition, other NBA stars will appear too such as Anthony Davis.
Stay tuned for more updates on Space Jam 2.
