The battle royale genre is growing larger by the year, and it’s tough to stand out in such a tough crowd. Proletariat’s Spellbreak looks and feels different enough to go up against the titans in the genre.
Proletariat’s Spellbreak is the latest entry in the battle royale genre. It launches today for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. Like Hyper Scape before it, the game is completely free-to-play. Here’s everything there is to know about this exciting title.
What is it?
The game is a class-based battle royale. Unlike standard battle royales, the main focus of the game is the use of magic instead of guns. Players will be playing as battlemages called Breakers.
While Apex Legends makes use of heroes with preset abilities, the game will allow players to choose their own class.

Gameplay
Up to 42 players can play the game’s lobby. There are three ways to play, Solo, Duos, and Trios. The game follows the standard battle royale system wherein the game ends when the last man or team is standing. As the game progresses, the map will become smaller and smaller, forcing players to engage in combat.
Before a match of Spellbreak starts, players will have to choose from one of six classes: Frostborn, Pyromancer, Toxicologist, Stoneshaper, Conduit, and Tempest. Each of the classes represents an element.
Once players start, they’ll have access to a basic ability related to their class. As the match goes on, they’ll be able to use more abilities of which there are three others to unlock. Eventually, players can equip another class so they can basically fuse attacks together.
If players focus on a certain class, they’ll be able to master it even further. Doing so unlocks cosmetics for the specific class.
Due to the small lobby, the game is much more fast-paced as compared to the likes of Apex Legends and Fortnite. The ability-based combat also forces players to think outside the box and use their abilities wisely. When playing in groups, it’s also important for players to create synergies with the classes of their teammates.
Spellbreak is jumping into a somewhat oversaturated gaming genre. Players are actually quite excited for the game despite the number of competitors behind it. Some are saying that the game offers enough variation from other battle royales. It’s free for current gen consoles so players shouldn’t miss out on it.
