Spider-Man 3 might tackle the Spider-verse amid rumors that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are in discussions to reprise their roles.
The actors previously starred as the webbed comic book superhero before Tom Holland donned the Spider-suit for the current Spider-Man films.
According to reports, Marvel has been secretly in talks with Garfield and Maguire to join Holland for a team-up.
The buzz grew louder after Jamie Foxx confirmed he is in the third movie as Electro. Yet hours after posting his announcement on Instagram, Foxx apparently deleted his teaser, per IGN.
However, YouTube scooper Grace Randolph of Beyond the Trailer said that Marvel boss Kevin Feige badly wants the trio of Garfield, Maguire, and Holland.
Foxx’s casting indicates that Feige was likely able to convince the stars to come together.
“One of the top priorities for Feige is making your wish come true and bringing Tobey, Andrew, and Tom together for a team-up,” Randolph said. “With news that Jamie Foxx is returning as Electro, that seems to confirm that Feige is doing it, and perhaps has done it.”
A live-action Spider-verse for the MCU?
Rumors about Maguire’s return surfaced months ago, stating that the 45-year-old actor apparently expressed interest in playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man again. Marvel is also allegedly convincing Maguire to cameo in the upcoming Benedict Cumberbatch sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Apparently, Feige is keen on creating a Spider-verse for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in collaboration with Sony.
Reports further said that Maguire’s return as the webbed one will give the actor the fitting farewell for his iconic character, similar to Robert Downey Jr.’s farewell as Iron Man in the Avengers. Incidentally, Sam Raimi is directing the sequel to Doctor Strange.
He and Maguire worked together in the Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007.
Marvel is reportedly also planning to introduce a live-action version of Miles Morales, the other Spider-Man. One of the names thrown into the ring is Stranger Things actor Caleb McLaughlin.
Filming with Holland
Production for Spider-Man 3 is speculated to begin this fall. While the exact date has not been revealed, Holland said in previous interviews that he expects to finish work by February 2021. Given this timeline, the movie is likely going to start production in the next few weeks.
Doctor Strange is also gearing up its production this fall. The schedules should work out well for Maguire since both productions take place in the Disney studio in London.
Marvel and Sony plan to release Spider-Man 3 in December 2021.
