‘Spider-Man 3’ delayed to December 2021

The follow-up to Spider-Man: Far From Home has now been delayed a full month, to a new December 17, 2021 schedule.

The upcoming third Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man 3, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was supposed to be released next year on November 5, 2021, but as confirmed by Sony Pictures to Variety, that schedule has since been pushed to mid-December.

Sony Pictures has noted, however, that this latest delay in Spider-Man 3’s release date only applies to the U.S. screening schedule, as pointed out by the Variety report. For the international release date, it remains to be seen for now when the MCU film will be released outside of America.

Delays due to pandemic

The third Spider-Man installment was originally intended for a summer release, specifically on July 16, 2021.

But back in April earlier this year, Sony Pictures had announced that it was postponing the movie’s release to November 5, 2021.

The entertainment giant had decided to make changes to the release schedule of its upcoming movie lineup due to the COVID-19 health crisis, which continues to hurt the global movie industry until today.

Even now, most cinemas across the globe have yet to reopen for business, and it remains unclear just when they will remain closed this year.

Of course, Spider-Man 3 is not the only major movie production that has suffered because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Highly-anticipated films like Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Patty Jenkins’s Wonder Woman 1984 have seen their respective original release dates moved to newer schedules.

Even the MCU has had to deal with rescheduling woes of its own. Apart from Spider-Man 3, other upcoming MCU releases have been postponed as well, like Black Widow (moved to November 6, 2020, The Eternals (February 12, 2021), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (May 7, 2021), Thor: Love and Thunder (February 11, 2022), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (March 25, 2022).

Another Spidey production, Sony Pictures’ upcoming sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is also delayed, pushed back six months later to October 7, 2022.

Excitement for the third movie

Fans have a big reason to be excited for Spider-Man 3.

In the ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) is shocked to see J. Jonah Jameson (JK Simmons) suddenly reveal Spidey’s secret identity as Peter Parker to the rest of the world.

It would be interesting to see how our favorite wall-crawler will deal with a world that knows his secret identity, not to mention the added inconvenience it will bring to his loved ones, namely Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), MJ (Zendaya), and Ned (Jacob Batalon).

For MCU fans everywhere, they will have to wait until December of next year to find out.
