‘Splatoon 3’ is on its way to the Nintendo Switch, coming next year

Nintendo announced that Splatoon 3, the third installment of kid squids shooting inks, is coming next year, confirming a 2022 release.

According to the most recent Nintendo Direct Showcase, Splatoon 3 will come sometime in 2022. There is no clear release date for the game just yet, but fans are eager to get their hands on what’s weirdly among the best team shooters of all time.

Next Splatoon will add new weapons, moves, and more

Splatoon as a franchise came as a surprise when it first came out in May 2015. At the time, the game came out for a low-powered Wii U. Even with the worst console of its generation, the title was still a massive success.

The first two installments of Splatoon were marquee titles. They were usually the reason why players bought their Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Fans classify it among the best team shooters of all time, usually under the same breath as games like Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch.

The third Splatoon does not have a ton of details on it yet. Even then, it will likely have all the trappings of the first two games. What fans know is the game will take place in “the sun scorched Splatlands” and Splatsville, a city for “battle-hardened Inklings & Octolings.”

“#Splatoon3 arrives on #NintendoSwitch in 2022!,” said the follow-up tweet after the lengthy intro trailer. “In the wake of chaos, enter the sun scorched Splatlands and the new city, Splatsville, inhabited by battle-hardened Inklings & Octolings. New weapons, moves, and more await, so be sure to keep an eye out for updates in the future.”

Announcement shows off new environments, maps

Splatoon 3 is the much-anticipated title for the Switch, especially now with rumors of a Switch Pro coming soon. The game bakes new features into the game, including character customizations, detailed environments, and new maps.

The game will also have new weapons like a bow weapon and even new abilities. These will contribute nicely to the returning 4v4 Turf Wars for the game.

Nintendo’s last installment, Splatoon 2, sold superbly, racking a solid 11.9 million units sold as of the end of 2020. The last update for the game, however, came in July 2019, which marks two full years of post-release support.

Splatoon 2’s development started immediately after the first title. By the time of the last update, version 5.0, the devs were not sure what’s next.

Splatoon 3 will be ready for the Switch next year, 2022. More details are coming over the next few months, including features and returning game modes.
