The debates about the Project Athia gameplay can now end, with Square Enix finally clearing this confusion.
Project Athia (a working title) is one of Sony’s entry for its PlayStation 5-exclusive titles. During the event, no further details about the game were discussed except for it being “a thrilling story-led, action-packed adventure from SQUARE ENIX’s new studio, Luminous Productions.”
Project Athia is going to be an open-world game
Of course, due to that the scarce of game information, there’s been an assumption that Project Athia is going to be a role-playing game (RPG). Thankfully, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda shed some light on this matter.
Per Gematsu, the confirmation came from an interview from Weekly Toyo Keizai Plus (a Japanese publication), with Square Enix President Matsuda. He mentioned that “The game Project Athia (title tentative), which we will release for PS5, is an open-world style game in which users can freely move around the game world.”
The “RPG assumption” might have been due to the fact that Square Enix has been highly noted for its JRPG titles. There’s the mention of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Outriders, a new RPG-Shooter title.
Expectations are high for Project Athia
Although, the team headlining the game’s development will be Luminous Productions. The studio is fairly newly—formed in 2018.
The team makes use of its internally-built Luminous Engine. They envision “to create games unlike anything experienced before, fusing the world’s latest technologies with art.”
When paired with capabilities of PS5, running on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, the gaming community expects quite the masterpiece.
President Matsuda further discussed:
“PS5 dramatically improves video technology, such as with the implementation of light-reflecting ‘ray-tracing’ technology. Compared to what you see on PC, it is nearly identical. By utilizing these special traits, we’re able to create incredibly precise imagery. We still plan on developing well-balanced games tailored to a platform’s traits, including smartphone and cloud-based games, but we will never stop developing for high-end platforms such as PS5. Because these things are packed with the best technology.”
With so little to go on, it will be hard to weigh in on the future of the game upon launch. If it’ll on par with Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima or even better, then it’ll be worth the wait for the Square Enix gaming community.
For now, all we have is a vague synopsis that reads:
IN A WORLD NOT HER OWN
WHERE RESOLVE WILL BE TESTED
TRUTHS WILL BE QUESTIONED
AND DEVOTIONS WILL BE DOUBTED
SHE WILL RISE.
Make sure to stay tuned for more developing updates on Project Athia, other upcoming games slated to arrive in PlayStation 5, and more.
