‘Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin’ is not a sequel, says producer

Creative producer Tetsuya Nomura confirmed that Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is not a sequel, or even a real FF title.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin has one of the weirdest titles out there. Even then, Nomura clarified that the game is not a sequel or even a prequel for FF1. Rather, it works as a sort off spin-off title that works within the Final Fantasy universe.

Stranger of Paradise works as remix of Final Fantasy 1

In an interview with Famitsu, he explained how they came up with the name. From what it seems, the entire title has a case of wasei-eigo or made-up English.

The game has many elements of the original Final Fantasy in play for Stranger of Paradise. Even then, FF Origin works as a weird remix that creates brand new gameplay. For long-time fans of the game, it has its DMC: Devil May Cry vibes to it.

“This work is based on FF1, so the settings are also based on FF1,” said Nomura, as translated via Google. “Where the main character of FF1, Warrior of Light, came from is mentioned in the ending, but Jack and his friends are also ‘strangers’.

“Who are Jack and his friends? Are they warriors of light? That is the axis of the story, so in the story you will be a “stranger”. “Paradise” means “the place of the rescued,” which means that Jack, his friends and “strangers” gather in paradise.”

There is more to FF Origin

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is a weird title so far. Nomura tried to underscore that there is more mystery to the game than meets the eye. Even then, much of the discussion is moot until the official release comes out, at least.

“When you think of FF1, you might think of a character like the Warrior of Light, but as you said, Jack’s design is to some extent the same if you know the setting of FF1,” answered Nomura.

“I think you can expect it. The initial equipment of Jack is only a symbol to show that they are not inhabitants of this world, and they have no character. It’s just like a game where you change a lot of equipment.”

A demo is available for the Playstation 5 at the moment. The demo itself had issues when it came out the first day, but those seem resolved now. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is coming out in 2022 and plays as a hack and slash title.
