A Marvel vs Capcom 2 Remaster seems to be in the works as Digital Eclipse has “begun discussions” with both Capcom and Disney in regards to potential licensing in the game.
Digital Eclipse, well known for their retro games specialization, noted that they made it clear with Disney and Capcom about their intent. The idea is to have a Marvel vs Capcom 2 Remaster, which is currently lost and unavailable, ready for new players once again.
Digital Eclipse pushing Disney and Capcom to agree
In an interview, studio head Mike Mika clarified the rumors swirling of their intent to remaster MvsC2. He revealed that his team approached Disney, the owner of Marvel, and Capcom for a potential reimagining of the franchise.
“In some ways, because we’re the last ones to touch that game, we feel kind of like the kid that’s part of a divorce,” Mika noted in the interview through VGC. “I don’t have any insight between Capcom and Disney. [I] know them both pretty well, and they’re great to work with.”
“I didn’t know what I was getting into,” he added. “[I] can’t even read my public email or any of my Twitter DMs without having to sift through hundreds of #FreeMvC2 messages from people. Which is amazing, but it’s like, oh my God.
“The reaction was incredible and I know that both Disney and Capcom have seen that loud and clear, and we’ve begun some discussions on that right now and we’re trying to see how far we can go.”
MvsC2 unavailable and expensive
MvsC2, known as New Age of Heroes, is one of the most important pillars of the fighting games community. It is a favorite across gamers due to its solid dynamics, as well as more balanced teamplay and complex character combos. Even then, the game is currently impossible to get outside of ROM emulation.
For starters, a Marvel vs Capcom 2 Remaster will help take it out into the mainstream. At the moment, the title is not sold on any existing platform and there are no official ports of it apart from defunct consoles. It doesn’t help that the game is still wildly popular, making it a great collector’s item for enthusiasts.
What stopped a comeback for the longest time now are the licensing rights. Marvel, for example, sold the rights for many of its IP to different companies.
Capcom and Disney are mostly unable to agree with the licensing for the title too. It will still take time before we learn if a Marvel vs Capcom 2 Remaster is on its way.
