Superman’s cousin, Supergirl, is taking her final heroic adventure as both The CW and Warner Bros. announced that the upcoming season, Season 6, will be the last.
Supergirl had a great run after it aired on CBS originally in 2015. The second season and onwards was picked up by The CW and the rest, as they say, is history.
Supergirl will follow Arrow as the next series to end in CW’s DC Arrowverse, per Deadline. Oliver Queen’s vigilante persona came to an end after eight good years (and equivalent seasons), after it kicked off in 2012.
Supergirl Season 6
The final season of Kara Danvers’ superhero adventure will reportedly air in 2021 with 20 episodes to be released.
As Entertainment Weekly reports, the Season 6 production will kick off this month in n Vancouver, Canada. In addition, the writing team has already started mapping out the storyline for the series’ last 20 episodes.
Generally speaking, the series’ production was reportedly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, Deadline notes that adjustments had to be made to accommodate Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy.
The Kara Danvers actress’ pregnancy was announced last March after she posted the news on her Instagram profile.

Per the media outlet’s sources, production may start next week, “pending a deal with the local unions to comply with SAG’s testing guidelines.”
Benoist reacts to her final season as Supergirl
In a lengthy Instagram post, Benoist wrote a tribute to her loved series, which reads:
“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.
She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”
Benoist further expressed her excitement for the “conclusion” of the show’s “amazing journey.” She further promises to make Season 6 “one helluva final season.”

Why bosses decided to pull the plug
There was no clear reason cited as to the bosses’ decision to finally end the series only after six season. Deadline further reported that the decision may have been due to the show’s delays and “downward ratings trajectory.”
“I hear the producers, the studio, the network and Benoist came to a decision that it was better to end the show with a longer final season,” says the media outlet.
True enough, per TV Series Finale, Season 4 and 5 had a comparable rating of “36% and 31%, respectively.”
