‘Sword Art Online’ Season 4: What will the new season entail?

Sword Art Online Season 4

Sword Art Online Season 4 may be far from the horizon, but there are a few updates that make fans more excited.

The third season just finished in September, while the Sword Art Online: Unital Ring book is yet to be completed. With that, it may take a long while before fans see Sword Art Online Season 4 on the small screen.

The possibility of Season 4’s coming.

The coming of the fourth season is yet to be announced. Instead, the franchise confirmed the arrival of a new anime movie, Sword Art Online: Progressive.

However, the film will be a reboot of the original anime and not a direct sequel to Sword Art Online: Alicization.

The movie is said to be titled Aria of the Starless Night, which will be based on the manga’s six volumes with the same title. If the reports ring true, this film is set to be out in 2021.

Anyhow, fans may find comfort knowing Alicization and Unital Ring will give them a glimpse of the fan-favorite SAO characters.

It is also good to note that Aniplex plans to adapt the entire SAO series into anime. So, fans can be assured that Sword Art Online Season 4 will be in the worksMonsters, and Critics noted.

Will Season 4 be in the works?

The third season adapted the entire Alicization arc, so the Unital Ring might be the final installment of the whole SAO series.

In an interview with A-1 Pictures director Manabu Ono, he said they “were planning to adapt the entire Sword Art Online series.”

Although he didn’t mention Sword Art Online Season 4 or the Unital Ring, the manga creator Reki Kawahara already confirmed the light novel series’ coming.

So, it might only mean that an anime adaptation of the novel series would come. It is all up to Kawahara when the new season will be in the works and come out.

The Unital Ring arc

According to EconoTimes, the Unital Ring arc will contain two separate stories in one volume, called Moon Cradle. There are rumors Aniplex will adapt these two tales for the next season.

Kawahara earlier confirmed he would be working on the anime’s final arc, writing a total of ten volumes.

If this would push through, it might take him almost three years to finish. If this happens, then Sword Art Online Season 4 would not be out until 2024.
