Taylor Swift accepted her 11th MTV Video Music Award for the Best Director for the first-ever music video she directed, “The Man.”
Taylor Swift took home the award literally, accepting the recognition at the comfort of her home. The 30-year-old star chose not to attend the VMA, continuing her quarantine time with her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, in Los Angeles.
Swift’s message to her fans
Swift thanked her fans for their continuous support and the team who helped her make her new album and music video possible.
“This is the very first video that I ever directed on my own, and I’m so grateful for this,” she said, per Us Weekly.
The hitmaker revealed she had the help of her two female producers to have the confidence to direct the clip.
“I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the team who believed in me as a first-time director and made this video with me,” she continued.
Of course, she also expressed her gratefulness to the fans who voted and believed in her.
“I was told this is an industry voted award, so I want to say everyone in the industry who voted for this video,” Swift added. “I also really want to thank the fans because you are the only reason that the industry cares about anything I do.”
She also thanked her followers for what they had done for Folklore.
“I’m just so blown away and taken aback by your generosity to me,” the singer-songwriter went on. “So, thank you for everything. I hope I get to see you soon.”

The Video of the Year award
The Video of the Year award was one of the most significant recognition of the event. “The Man” showed the privilege that white males had and the U.S.’s “imbalanced gender dynamics.”
Aside from this, she also received Best Pop Song nominations for “Lover” and Video For Good for “The Man.” She also got nominated for Best Art Direction for “Lover,” which Ethan Tobman directed.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Swift surprisingly released her eighth album, Folklore. Elle noted the LP featured a combination of different stories, from her real-life to fictional characters and events.
“A tale that becomes folklore is one that is passed down and whispered around,” Swift said about the album. “Sometimes even sung about. The lines between fantasy and reality blur, and the boundaries between truth and fiction become almost indiscernible.”
She continued that speculations became fact over time.
“Myths, ghost stories, and fables. Fairytales and parables. Gossip and legend,” Taylor Swift added. “Someone’s secrets written in the sky for all to behold.”
