Netflix has officially announced the cancellation of the highly acclaimed adventure series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 2. Reportedly, the series is time-consuming and expensive.
The series is a prequel to the original 1982 film created by Jim Henson that explores the world of Thra. Its success comes primarily from the creativity of co-creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. As a result, the series won the recent Emmy award for Outstanding Children’s Program. Unfortunately, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 2 will not be coming to Netflix anytime soon.
What is “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” all about?
The plot follows the adventures of three Gelflings, Rian, Deet, and Brea as they try to bring back Thra to its glorious days. It is said that the planet Thra is dying and sickness spreads across the land. However, there is an enormous power known as Crystal of Truth found at the heart of Thra. But the evil Skeksis has corrupted the Crystal of Truth, making the Gelflings powerless.

When the three Gelflings found out about the truth, they journey together on a quest to unite all Gelflings clans. With their renewed hope, an epic battle begins between the Gelflings and the Skeksis.
Netflix cancelled the series’ second installment
Although The Dark Crytal has captured the hearts of many viewers, Netflix has still opted to cancel the fantasy adventure series. One of the many reasons for its cancellation is its expensive production. Moreover, the show also reportedly hired 2,500 people into the set to bring the prequel to life.

Additionally, the production team would need 170 puppets, 75 different sets, and 83 puppeteers, making the filming the longest shoot of any Netflix show. On the other hand, the coronavirus pandemic has also significantly impacted the renewal of the show.
And while the series looked stunning and visually attractive on screen, it is also time-consuming. Director Louis Leterrier told Radio Times that much attention is required to create believable characters and environments. He said:
“It’s not like CG – CG has a tendency to give you one layer and background. This is infinite. The eye isn’t tricked by two CG layers, it just keeps going. And also we were very mindful and careful to put creatures and little stories in the background, all puppeteer-ed.”
The creators have a solid plot for season 2
Jeffrey Addiss confirmed that The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 2 has a “concrete document,” and is ready to roll out. He further stated:
“If we are lucky enough to get more seasons then the story will go on and we know where it’s going and it’s maybe more hopeful than you might think.”
