There are many gaming awards held each year, but perhaps the biggest is always The Game Awards, which is held in December. The pandemic affected a lot of gaming events this year, but that isn’t stopping the biggest awards show for gaming.
When the pandemic hit, major events like Blizzcon were cancelled. However, most managed to make do with online conferences. The Game Awards – the dream awards show of every developer is going to take a different approach when it comes to how they would move forward with the event.
The show must go on
In a tweet, Geoff Keighly announced that the show would go on. The show will be held on December 10 but will be entirely online to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
“In 2020, video games have connected and comforted us more than ever, and that makes the 2020 edition of The Game Awards our most important show ever. Our team is working hard to deliver an innovative and thoughtful program that celebrates excellence, previews the future, and amplifies important voices that are shaping the future of this medium.”
As per usual, the Los Angeles event will be through a broadcast. However, support studio locations will be in Tokyo and London for this year’s show.

Cut-off date not yet announced
Surprisingly, Keighly announced that the cut-off date for eligible titles isn’t confirmed yet. Usually, The Game Awards has a mid-November cut off for the games that will be eligible for awards. This basically meant that all games that were released after the cut-off date were no longer eligible for awards.
This is great news as a lot of other titles are still releasing late November. These include Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity and CD Projekt Red’s highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077.
A lot of games are in the running for awards in the show. Most people are expecting Animal Crossing New Horizons, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima to gather awards this year. As for the indies, all eyes are on Hades. It was a big year for gaming, and players have a lot of games they want to win at this year’s game show.
The Game Awards isn’t event a decade old, but it’s already one of the biggest gaming shows there is. Despite the restrictions, it is good that the developers are pushing through with the event in their own ways.
