The Last of Us 2 will go down as one of the most divisive games in history. Despite the criticisms and controversy surrounding the game, it still served as a big cash cow for Sony, after all.
Even before launching, there were already a lot of issues surrounding Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us 2. While players praised the game’s visuals and gameplay, a huge chunk of the community lambasted the story. Despite the issues, it seems like the game was able to accomplish what it was supposed to do, which was to make great sales.
Now the third highest-grossing PS4 game
The game has already broken many records for Sony. According to a recent report, it is now the third highest-grossing PlayStation 4 game. It sits behind Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War. The data accounts for the game’s life-to-date sales. Since the game is just a few months old, there’s still a chance for it to surpass the records of those ahead of it.
Apart from this, the game has also broken other records. The game is responsible for being Sony’s second-biggest launch title. It also broke the company’s digital sales records.
Of course, the game’s success is partly because of the popularity of The Last of Us. Still, it’s surprising that the game had reached such heights even after its issues before it launched.
Its success leads many to believe that The Last of Us 2 is far from being done. Many believe that the game still has some upcoming content. The developer recently introduced a new Grounded Mode and Permadeath mode along with a selection of new modifiers for the game.
Fans are hoping that the developers will launch a multiplayer mode, just like the one found in The Last of Us. A leak recently showed what is said to be the Factions MP for the sequel, but Naughty Dog has been tight-lipped about it.
With regards to DLC like Left Behind for the first game, Naughty Dog has said that they aren’t particularly interested in such extra content. Still, fans are hoping for more stories such as what happened to Tommy during the game and also about Abby and Lev’s journey to the Fireflies at the end of the game.
The Last of Us 2 may be controversial, but there’s no doubt that it’s a successful game. The numbers prove that that is indeed the case.
