The Last of Us 2 has been out for almost a week, and we’re sure that the majority of the players have already finished the highly anticipated sequel. Players have enjoyed the sequel currently, but moving forward, will Naughty Dog continue the story with The Last of Us 3?
The Last of Us 3 is possible, looking at the ending of the sequel alone. As for Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann and Halley Cross gave their insights on whether or not the story should move forward.
For the most part, The Last of Us 2 is a great follow-up to the PlayStation 3 classic. It has already broken sales records, and despite the negative user reviews, the game did well for Naughty Dog financially. For there to be another sequel, Neil Druckmann believes that some conditions have to be met first.
Another sequel
In a recent interview, Neil Druckmann says that the sequel’s story should first reach the same emotional depth as its predecessors. Considering how emotional and gripping the story of the first games are, this is a high standard to reach.
“There’s already so many things you’ve seen about the backstory, about how the outbreak happens, so we’d really have to figure out how to create a new experience that matches the emotional impact of these stories and I don’t know what that is, ” says Druckmann.
If there ever was a The Last of Us 3, we’re sure that the game will be launching for the PlayStation 5. Naughty Dog will likely take its time developing the next game as it has set such a high standard for itself already.
Ending explained
The Last of Us 2 ends on a sad and controversial note. For starters, she let Abby live. Fans believe that it was a slap to the face of Joel who’s death was not redeemed. At the same time, at least Ellie found her peace by learning to let go.
If there was another game, it’s likely that it will take us back to Firefly territory. Although the Fireflies didn’t appear in the sequel, it’s hinted that Abby is going to make her way back to them somehow.
The Last of Us 3 is probably years away from now. Fans are still reeling in from the events of the sequel, and it’s good that there’s going to be a gap. Who knows, we might get some extra content for The Last of Us 2 featuring Abby as the lead.
