Disney is reportedly not going ahead with the plan to do a spinoff of The Mandalorian with Gina Carano. The actress, who plays the mercenary Cara Dune, is at the center of a firestorm on social media over her political stance.
Carano shared posts and memes, showing her anti-mask stance in this COVID-19 pandemic on Twitter. She also hinted at her support for the current administration and accused the Democrats of election fraud, sparking a backlash from The Mandalorian fans.
We need to clean up the election process so we are not left feeling the way we do today.
Put laws in place that protect us against voter fraud.
Investigate every state.
Film the counting.
Flush out the fake votes.
Require ID.
Make Voter Fraud end in 2020.
Fix the system. 🇺🇸— Gina Carano 🕯 (@ginacarano) November 5, 2020
According to an insider, Carano’s recent controversies prompted Disney to reconsider signing up the actress for her own TV show.
Fans enjoyed Carano’s character in The Mandalorian season 1, which launched in 2019. So, the Mouse House toyed with the idea of a spinoff featuring Cara Dune. The plan was to add this show to the upcoming slate of the Star Wars series in development for the Disney+ streaming service.
However, things have turned around for Carano after a year as fans apparently want her fired from the series because of her social media statements. Sources said that Disney wants to avoid a backslash similar to Amber Heard’s status in the DC Universe.
Woah, Gina this is extremely irresponsible. If you are referring to the election, there is no proof of any fraud. If you at referring to mask wearing, we should be doing that and if we all did it we would be able to go outside sooner.

A Way Out for Carano
The fans now believe that the latest episode of The Mandalorian shows a way out for Carano.
In “The Siege,” which dropped on Nov. 20, an officer from the New Republic asked Dune if she ever thought about joining their ranks. Dune has a strong history as a soldier in her homeland, Alderaan. However, she dismisses the idea and told the officer she has no plans.
Viewers speculate that this is a foreshadowing of what’s to come for Dune and for Carano’s part in the series. But The Mandalorian season 2 filmed way before the pandemic crisis and the elections. There’s no actual proof that the actress is being written out.
Carano has not said if she wants to leave the series. The star of the show, Pedro Pascal, has been vocal about his stance as anti-Trump.
Third season production
The Mandalorian season 3 plans to start production before 2020 ends, according to series creator Jon Favreau.
Speaking with Variety, the esteemed director and producer said that they are assuming everything will go forward as planned amid the COVID-19 protocols. Favreau said that their show is in a unique position because they mostly do digital work and a lot of their characters are in mask.
According to Entertainment Weekly, there’s a “heightened secrecy” surrounding the story and the script in the previous seasons. The same system will remain for season 3. Characters introduced in season 1 and 2 will likely have more storylines in the third season, especially if they appeal to the audience.
There’s still no release date for The Mandalorian season 3 since production has yet to kick off.
