‘The Matrix’ 4: Keanu Reeves shuts down prequel rumors

There will be “no going in the past” for The Matrix 4 and star Keanu Reeves said that the new film is not going to be a prequel.

Speculations that The Matrix 4 will be set before the events of the original trilogy have been rife since the casting of new faces. Fans assumed that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play the younger version of Morpheus since Laurence Fishburne is not part of this new film.

However, Reeves shut down all the rumors and said that the latest installment has an unexpected story. Speaking on The One Show, Reeves said that the new film is actually “a love story.”

“It’s inspiring. It’s another version, a call to wake up and it has some great action,” Reeves said.

The actor also said that the cast and crew are truly trying to make a magical film. Reeves further teased that all will be revealed in due time, as fans impatiently try to figure out the plot of the new movie.

Neo and Trinity forever?

Reeves, however, doesn’t say if the love story involves his character, Neo, and Carrie-Ann Moss’ Trinity. The relationship between these two has been the backstory of The Matrix mythology in the last two decades.

But Neo “presumably” died at the end of the third film, which was released in 2003. According to Indiewire, The Matrix 4 could potentially open with Neo and Trinity finding themselves drawn to each other again as a new evil threat looms.

Details of the upcoming movie have been top-secret. The cast members have also been cryptic in interviews.

Harris praises Lana Wachowski and the team

But Neil Patrick Harris said he cannot help himself from talking about the film because of the brilliant work of writer and director Lana Wachowski. Harris revealed that his role on The Matrix 4 is small but he appreciates being a part of it just because of Wachowski.

“I think she has great inclusive energy, and her style has shifted visually from what she had done to what she is currently doing,” Harris said of the director.

Fans think that Harris will play a villain in The Matrix 4, similar to Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith. But if his role is small, then he will likely not have an impactful part like Smith.

Harris went on to say that the people working in this new film are “very smart” about what they want to do. The actor also said that The Matrix 4 is the kind of movie that needs to be seen on the big screen and he cannot wait for the fans to witness it.

The Matrix 4 is set to hit theaters in April 2022.
