Netflix’s next iteration of The Old Guard might include another A-list star alongside Charlize Theron.
Rumors are rife that Netflix is keen on casting Gal Gadot in the role of a new immortal in The Old Guard 2. Executives of the streaming platform were, so far, impressed with the Wonder Woman star’s performance in Red Notice. Netflix will distribute the movie, which has yet to return to filming after the COVID-19 lockdown.
According to reports, Netflix wants Gadot for a new project, and her work in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) gives her the edge to star in another action film. However, the casting will still hinge on many things, especially when Theron turned down a chance to work with Gadot.
Theron took offense at a Wonder Woman casting
The Old Guard lead star said in an interview in 2019 that she was offered the role of Gadot’s mother in the first Wonder Woman movie.
“This is a great example of how Hollywood, like, slaps you in the face when you start aging,” Theron said about that offer. “It was the defining moment when I crossed over and I wasn’t fully aware of it.”
Theron is a decade older than Gadot, who is 35 years old. Connie Nielsen, on the other hand, is in her mid-50s and nabbed the role of Hippolyta, the Amazonian Queen in the DCEU film.
Greenlight for the sequel
Netflix, however, has not yet given the green light for The Old Guard 2. The movie, released on the platform on July 10, has been set up with a cliffhanger for a potential follow-up.
Writer Greg Rucka said that there had been discussions about the second movie. However, the real question is if Netflix will approve the sequel and sign off a budget for it.
“The decision to make another one is going to be made by people who are far outside of my lane, Rucka said. “‘There’s more you can do, and the movie absolutely opens the possibility for that, but it doesn’t demand it. It doesn’t say, ‘Oh, this will only make sense if we do another one!'”
Rucka also wrote the graphic novel inspired by the movie. However, he hinted that the follow-up could veer off from the source material. As a writer, he recognizes how some stories may work for the comic book but not for the screen. Because of this, he is eager to work on The Old Guard 2 pending a go signal from the streaming platform.
