Netflix’s hit film The Old Guard is likely going to receive a sequel due to its massive viewership numbers, but the start of filming will hinge on Charlize Theron, the star of the action movie.
According to Deadline, talks for The Old Guard sequel have not been officially started between the streaming platform and writer Greg Rucka. However, this is apparently not the real reason why Netflix has yet to confirm the sequel.
The report cited that the planning and writing of the next script are not the problems as there is a wealth of story to uncover and mine for the follow-up movie. The sequel’s delay may have something to do with Theron’s schedule.
Charlize Theron is an in-demand A-lister
Theron is a huge Hollywood star with a string of projects on her radar. She’s always going to be in consideration for the next big film.
But Theron apparently tries to avoid doing back-to-back movies from the same production. She still has the sequel of Atomic Blonde in the pipeline, and its production hasn’t started as well because of Theron.
Theron also reportedly spaces her action-heavy movies because of the physical demands. After The Old Guard, her next film will likely be character-driven, which won’t require an exhausting training.
Contract renegotiations with an A-lister like Theron will also be complicated as sequels will include “back-end and other residuals” from the streaming platform.
The star wants to do a sequel
In an interview with Variety, Theron said that everyone in the cast and crew, including herself, is interested in coming back for The Old Guard sequel. But she acknowledges they need “a little resting period” and wait for the right time to start the conversation on working on the movie again.
Netflix revealed that 72 million households streamed The Old Guard on its first week of release. The movie is about Andy (Theron) and a group of immortal mercenaries who tracked down someone of their kind, while a biotech company goes after them to use their DNA to create a medicine for immortality. Also in the cast are Kiki Layne (Nile Freeman), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Copley), Marwan Kenzari (Joe), Matthias Schoenaerts (Booker), Luca Marinelli (Nicky), Henry Melling (Merrick) and Van Veronica Ngo (Quynh).
Gina Price-Bythewood directed The Old Guard on Netflix based on the graphic novels of the same title. The director said that Rucka has always intended the movie to be a trilogy, hence the cliffhanger. So, where the story goes next is pretty clear for the writer.
