The Orville season 3 has not yet restarted production due to the coronavirus pandemic, but producer Tom Costantino said the long wait will be worth it as the upcoming installment is going to be “bigger and better.”
Speaking with Egotastic FunTime! on YouTube, Constantino teased that The Orville season 3 will be its “biggest season yet” in terms of production value. Fox apparently gave them a bigger budget, despite rumors that the studio was eager to cancel the series.
The producer also hinted that they re-recorded the show’s opening sequence with a “more beautiful version of the theme.”
The space show is getting some space
Constantino also revealed that they could not restart filming The Orville season 3 because of the COVID-19 situation in Los Angeles County. Cases continue to rise in the state, which could shut down production again so soon after they return to the set.
The cast and crew were originally hoping to return by August. However, Los Angeles coronavirus cases are at an alarming rate, according to its public health officials.
No one is more eager to return to work than The Orville creator and star Seth MacFarlane. On July 8, the actor and writer said that they’ve planned “some good stuff” for the upcoming season, and they’ve been raring to work on it, if only “the world starts spinning again.”

The long wait will be worth it!
The Orville aired its last episode on Fox in April 2019. Three months later, the network announced that the show would be moving to the video-on-demand platform Hulu, with a potential late 2020 release.
But the show might not complete filming by the end of the year. The producer is still optimistic that the long wait will be worth it.
“I’m not saying this [as a producer], I’m saying this as a fan,” Constantino said.
It’s looking amazing, so far
MacFarlane revealed in Jimmy Fallon’s talk show that they were halfway through production when the coronavirus lockdown happened. Work has been done at home since then in the editing room, and MacFarlane said that what they have is “looking amazing” so far.
But the show creator has some worries about continuity when they get back to the set. He joked that some of the cast members might have gained 20 pounds by the time they restart, and that’s going to hard to fix in the editing room.
As with the previous seasons, MacFarlane has been super secretive about The Orville season 3’s stories and guest appearances. However, most of the cast members are definitely on board to return.
