The Portal movie is still in the works, as confirmed by the film’s producer J.J. Abrams. According to him, Warner Bros is still developing a script for it.

In an interview by iconic producer and director J.J. Abrams with IGN, he detailed that The Portal movie is under continuous development. This comes eight years after he announced his intent to work with Valve back in a DICE talk in 2013.

Star Wars director marvels at game’s film potential

In his interview, Abrams detailed that his Portal film is now with Warner Bros. and it’s moving forward. The Star Wars director notes that the script has enormous potential and is looking forward to its progress.

“We actually do have a script that’s being written for the Portal movie now at [Warner Bros.],” said Abrams. “We’re really excited about the take and the pitch, so it feels like that thing’s finally on the rails.”

Abrams did not detail who is the writing team behind the story. Even then, he notes that they will be expanding the story of Portal, with the game itself having solid lore. Which parts will undergo adaptation is unknown.

“It’s got enormous potential for a lot of reasons, one of which is because of the limited narrative of the game, as ingeniously told as it is, the potential of it is so huge. It’s gonna be super fun.”

Portal story follows expansive lore

The Portal movie will come from one of Valve’s most stellar games, which is the Portal franchise. The franchise itself had two titles, Portal 1 and 2, offering similar gameplay but different puzzles.

The story of Portal follows Chell, a silent protagonist trapped under the Aperture Science labs. Chell is used to solve testing chambers by the lab’s AI, GLADOS. To solve the chambers, the test subject uses a handheld portal device.

The lore for Portal is quite deep, with much of its history fleshed out during Portal 2. These include Wheatley, voiced by Stephen Merchant and Cave Johnson, voiced by J.K. Simmons.

While the news for Portal is somewhat positive, the movie for Half-Life is almost dead in the water. Furthermore, Abrams notes that “the Half-Life thing, we’re not actively involved with at the moment.” Back in 2016, Abrams’ production Bad Robot was developing the story.

Video game movies are gaining steam recently, receiving relative success after years of bad history. Detective Pikachu recently became the top-grossing video game movie. Furthermore, the Sonic movie and Mortal Kombat were also box-office hits, so the Portal movie is in good company.
