‘The Sims 5’ hints of a massive multiplayer feature and new platforms

The rumor mill is humming again for The Sims 5 as the year goes on. It appears that the game might render new features and upgraded platforms.

The Sims 5 has become the long-awaited successor to the hit Sims 4, and it can’t come at a better time than this. While Electronic Arts pushes buzz for their life simulation game, more speculation are flying through the air.

The much-awaited multiplayer option is up there, together with a ton of other features. Stories about different multiplayer game modes a la GTA Online are among the loudest. Potential competitive matches and added social features are also gaining ground.

The Sims 5 multiplayer hinted as early as Feb 2020

Back in February, EA CEO Andrew Wilson hinted at the potential of multiplayer for future Sims titles. According to Wilson in EA’s Q3 earnings call,

Sims developer Maxis “…continues to think about The Sims for a new generation across platforms and a cloud-enabled world.”

Wilson hinted of a possible social interaction and competition that will become a part of the Sims experience. His allusion to the original The Sims Online harkens back to the landmark 2002 online game. In the game, players can have jobs, an in-game economy, and even skills.

There is a clamor for an online Sims experience, with almost all of the past titles being single-player. The last installment, Sims 4, came out September 2014, nearly six years ago. EA still furnishes the game with new content packs and DLC, but a new title is in order.

The Sims competitive mode will be a welcome addition

Competitive mode is becoming a staple rumor for The Sims 5 too. This part is lacking for much of the life-sim’s development. It appears that fans are showing happiness even with the lack of competition. In line with that, in 2018, the game sold as much as 10 million copies, with thrice that in expansions.

Competitive online games are the bread and butter of online games over the last few years. Games such as PUBG, Fortnite, and GTA Online all offer Battle Royale experiences. Competitive gameplay in Sims will be a welcome addition if online play is possible.

Better graphics, RTX potential for Sims 5

Sims 5 is also due for a graphic overhaul, and the fanbase expects the change in style. With different platforms around the horizon, the life simulator needs to step up. It should take advantage of the new technology in many of the upcoming platforms.

EA’s best-selling franchise of all time can take advantage of new console platforms. For starters, rumors are swirling for a port to the Nintendo Switch. There’s also the potential for ray tracing, with the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X being powerful enough for RTX graphics.

The Sims 5 will likely be available with PC, where much of its avid fanbase exists.
