Netflix’s superhero series The Umbrella Academy is gearing up for its second season release on Friday, July 31, but a new report reveals that the show could end with season 3, but it has not yet gone into principal production.
Sources apparently told We Got This Covered that fans of The Umbrella Academy may still look forward to “at least one more season” once the second installment launches in a few weeks. The details have not been concretely laid out, but the news outlet said their source has correctly tipped them off with news of the Extraction sequel, which received a green light from Netflix in April.
The third season was quietly renewed
Barring an official announcement, The Umbrella Academy was reportedly quietly renewed for season 3 ahead of the season 2 release. According to What’s On Netflix, two new writers have been brought aboard the team for the third season — Lauren Otero and Elizabeth Padden — and Steve Blackman, the showrunner, also recently signed an overall deal with Netflix to continue with his commitments.
The report went on to presume that the renewal was needed to ensure that there will be little disruptions to the production in light of the coronavirus pandemic restrictions. This would allow the writing team to begin pre-production with a lot of writing and conceptualizing from their home offices, while viewers wait for the release of The Umbrella Academy season 2.
The Umbrella Academy season 2 plot, spoilers, and cast
The Umbrella Academy became an instant hit when it debuted in the streaming platform in February 2019, and it looks like the second season will delve into more time travel action, which was teased at the end of season 1.
The official description from Netflix indicates that the Hargreeves siblings will be scattered in different timelines in Dallas, Texas, in season 2. But the show will open in the 1960s, where some of the siblings have been stuck for a while and have moved on with their lives.
Viewers will recall that Five (Aidan Gallagher) used his powers to mess with the timeline at the end of the first season so they can stop an apocalypse. But such a disruption has apparently opened another doomsday scenario as the 1960s is all about the threats of a nuclear war.

Aside from Gallagher, returning for The Umbrella Academy season 2 are Ellen Page, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan, David Castañeda, and Justin H. Min. There will also be plenty of new faces, who will have ties to the Hargreeves siblings. Among them are Lila (Ritu Arya), Raymond (Yusuf Gatewood), Sissy (Marin Ireland), and a group of Swedish assassins (Tom Sinclair, Kris Holden-Ried, and Jason Bryden).
