Netflix hasn’t announced the renewal of The Umbrella Academy season 3, but preparations are reportedly underway for filming in October.
The superhero series topped Netflix’s viewership after season 2 dropped in July. Nielsen also revealed that The Umbrella Academy dominates the streaming format. With these details in mind, a third season seems a sure ball, but Netflix has been mum about its return.
A list from the Director’s Guild of Canada, however, shows that the cast and crew are scheduled to start production in Toronto in October. The exact date isn’t listed, but it coincides with the schedule Production Weekly also listed.
It comes as the cast members have said in interviews that they are also waiting for a green light for the third season.
Hopeful for a season 3
In an interview with Movies That Changed My Life on IMDb, Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison Hargreeves/Number 3) said that she wished she knows more about next season.
“We’re honestly waiting with bated breath as well, as [the fans],” the star said.
Justin H. Min (Ben Hargreeves/Number 6) definitely wants a third season of The Umbrella Academy since he’s set to take on a bigger role. In the second season finale, the Hargreeves kids were shocked to see that Ben is the new leader. Equally shocking was that they’ve arrived at an alternative timeline with The Sparrow Academy.
Min said he will be playing a different Ben in the upcoming episodes, pending a renewal.
“He would be quite different, in terms of not only his appearance but even in terms of personality and character,” the actor told TV Line.
Even the comic book series creator Gerard Way is hopeful for a Netflix renewal because viewers are just learning the “true nature” of the characters.
Kate Walsh’s return
Meanwhile, Kate Wash played The Handler of The Commission in The Umbrella Academy. The villain unexpectedly popped in season 2 despite being shot in the head in the season 1 finale. However, she was killed off again at the end of last season.
Speculations suggest that the actress could still be back next season as another character. Walsh may play a crucial role in the Sparrow Academy’s alternative timeline.
Yet the actress said in an Esquire interview that there are no plans for her return. As far as she’s concerned, The Handler is a goner. Showrunner Steve Blackman also confirmed that The Handler is definitely dead, but then again, Blackman didn’t actually say no to Walsh never coming back.
The Umbrella Academy season 1 and 2 remain streaming on Netflix.
