‘The Walking Dead’ spinoff with Daryl and Carol: What to know

Share

The Walking Dead is ending after 11 seasons, but the story of Daryl and Carol will continue in 2023. Here are some early details for the upcoming spinoff.

AMC confirmed Wednesday that The Walking Dead would close with a 24-episode season 11. Set to air in 2021 and 2022, the final run will set up the spinoff series starring Norman Reedus (Daryl) and Melissa McBride (Carol).

In a press release, AMC stated that the still-untitled spinoff would have Angela Kang as showrunner. Executive producer and the show’s chief content officer Scott Gimple will be working alongside her.

“I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol,” Kang said. “Working with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride has been a highlight of my career and I’m thrilled that we get to keep telling stories together.”

Since Daryl’s character is not in the source comic book series from Robert Kirkman, it’s safe to assume that this spinoff will be a completely new story. However, the teaser for season 10’s final episode might hint of what’s to come.

Daryl and Carol want no more fighting

In The Walking Dead season 10 finale’s teaser, the two main characters are shown discussing a life where there’s no more killing or fighting to survive.

“No more fighting, get on the bike and go,” Daryl utters.

“Head out West,” Carol agrees and Daryl tells her they should be heading to New Mexico.

Reedus said that he always sees his character’s pairing with McBride’s Carol as the ultimate friendship goal.

“Daryl’s relationship with Carol has always been my favorite relationship on the show. Sorry, Rick,” Reedus said. “I love the way these characters interact and relate to each other on so many levels and can’t wait to see where their ride goes from here.”

McBride, on the other hand, is eager to learn about the pairing once the spinoff starts. But it’s unlikely for Daryl and Carol to end up romantically linked to each other.

What to expect from the season 10 finale

Meanwhile, The Walking Dead season 10 finale will air on Sunday, Oct. 4. AMC will release the episode a few days ahead for premiere subscribers on Thursday, Oct. 1.

Production disruptions due to COVID-19 forced AMC to push the finale’s airing by several months after the airing of season 10 episode 15, in April. The final episode, titled “A Certain Doom,” will pick up after the last storylines at the abandoned hospital.

Fans expect an epic fight to end the Whisperer War in The Walking Dead season 10 finale.
