Two of Square Enix’s beloved RPG titles have undergone rebranding and are now incorporating “3D Remake” in their labels.
Coming in a form of a tweet, user Shaun Musgrave showed two images depicting the change. One displays a folder containing all Final Fantasy titles released on mobile with “3D” enclosed on FFIII and FFIV, respectively. Another is an image highlighting the change in full for one title, which read as Final Fantasy IV (3D Remake).

Although the change in question is only fitting for the titles, it still raises speculations on what it entails. On the one hand, a group of speculators claim that another different remake could be in the works. Otherwise, will be a part of Square Enix’s future roadmap. On another hand, there are those who claim that 2D ports version of the games are finally hitting the mobile platform. Both camps make notable points considering the lingering concerns with the current mobile version.
The Conjectures
The topic on another 3D remake for the third and fourth mainline FF titles in itself is particularly interesting. Depending on the amount of effort SE is willing to pour into it, this could mean big projects. At the best-case scenario, this could be on the same scale as Final Fantasy VII Remake. But it could also just be on a smaller scale, which requires less time and manpower to make.
Releasing the classic versions of both FF3 and FF4 is not away from possibilities, either. With many diehard fans still preferring the original 2D designs over the existing 3D versions, there’s relative demand to make the port. A port of the original Final Fantasy III is especially welcome, given the original never having made it outside Japan. A fact which was recently pointed out by VG24/7’s Alex Donaldson (tweet).

The relabeling comes with more suspicion, however, now that a Square Enix conference is imminent later this week. Which, if anything, insinuates a potential announcement regarding projects based on the two titles.
E3 Presentation
With the Electronic Entertainment Expo just around the corner, it only comes likely that a major SE’s presentation would involve FF. But while this will neither involve FFIII nor FFIV, it will point to the company’s rumored developing title based on the franchise. Specifically, the action role-playing game, Final Fantasy Origins. Fans of Souls-like gameplay would be particularly interested considering the project’s gameplay direction.
