Apple just shared another significant achievement in the form of a Chinese short film, Nian, which is entirely shot on its new iPhone 12 Pro Max!
According to Variety, Apple released Nian, a short film to celebrate Chinese New Year. Lulu Wang, the title director, shot it entirely on the company’s latest iPhone 12 Pro Max cameras. The California tech giant tapped the filmmaker to highlight its current generation’s model’s real power and cinematic features.
Wang, who also directed 2019’s The Festival, made this new short film, Nian, celebrating the Chinese New Year. The movie puts a fresh twist on a famous Chinese folktale.

Lulu Wang and his team shot the 11-minute film entirely on an iPhone 12 Pro Max. The phone’s cameras are the first in the world to capture HDR videos in Dolby Vision format. Plus, they also enable on-the-go editing of 60fps 4K videos directly on the smartphone! Even during its last year’s announcement event, Apple presented a 60-second film shot on the new iPhone 12 Pro‘s cameras. That HDR clip, by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, was also having the quality of Dolby Vision.
Nian is Apple’s fourth annual Chinese New Year film for those who don’t know, so it looks like the company, every year, keeps testing its own iPhone cameras’ abilities. Which is a good thing for the most profitable company, as far as its recent earnings report is concerned. Thanks to the enormous sales figures, comprising iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max, and many other products, it gained over a record $111 billion in revenues. It’s even beyond the previously made projections of many trade analysts and major business portals.
Speaking briefly about the short film, it tells the story of a brave girl who’s trying to find the widely feared beast called Nian. But when she comes face to face with him, she realizes that the creature is not at all scary.
“It’s fascinating that we have this opportunity to retell this ancient story, to capture these incredibly cinematic images with the iPhone, this very versatile device,” director Wang said in a recent media interaction. He praised the smartphone camera’s capabilities and features. The movie is also a part of Apple’s now-famous “Shot on iPhone” campaign.
What’s coming next from Apple in 2021?
Meanwhile, the California tech giant seems to be having a great time after it recently announced a record revenue report. But Apple never settles down, and that’s why its next goal is to come out with great products this year as well.
Just like 2020’s iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max models, fans will hope for an even better iPhone 13 camera upgrade. Then there’s also the iOS 15 software, which will make its way during June’s WWDC event. But in the next few months, music enthusiasts will also witness the announcement of AirPods Studio headphones. They were delayed last year due to several issues.
