Tom Cruise confessed that he didn’t expect his then-wife Katie Holmes would divorce him.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have a 16-year age gap. However, when they were still together, the two were very much in love. Most did not expect that their marriage would end up in divorce, even Cruise, himself, did not see it coming.
Tom Cruise didn’t expect divorce
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got married in 2006. However, they separated six years later. In 2013, when Cruise was promoting his movie Oblivion, he opened up about his divorce from the Dawson’s Creek alum and admitted he did not see it coming.
“I didn’t expect it,” Cruise said per CBS News.
“Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor.”
Cruise confessed that he was shocked by his split from Holmes, which happened a day before his 50th birthday. The Mission Impossible star said that he had some time to process it and called the experience humbling.
“I had an unbelievable amount of time to think about it,” he continued. “To be 50 and to have experiences and to think, you have a grip on everything, and then it hits you: This is it, what life can do to you.”
What did happen before their split?
In May 2012, Tom Cruise gushed about his then-wife in an interview with Playboy. The actor called Katie Holmes an “extraordinary person” and said that anyone who would spend five minutes with Holmes would see it.
“I’m just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special,” he added.
However, in June 2012, many noticed that Holmes did not join Cruise when he promoted his movie Rock of Ages. On June 29, 2012, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise.
Two weeks before Holmes filed for divorce, she was seen out and about with Cruise. The couple was “uncomfortably holding hands,” Mirror reported.
Based on the photo, they were walking while holding hands. However, Holmes looked unhappy, and while her husband clung into her.
According to the publication, Cruise had no idea that Holmes was already planning to travel to New York to file papers. In her court filing, Holmes cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their divorce.
How the couple announced their split
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes acknowledged their split.
“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest,” Holmes’ lawyer said without mentioning Cruise.
“Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy,” Cruise’s rep confirmed.
