BookBlocks, an NFT company, has recently partnered with a New York-based organization to provide help for Afghan women who have been displaced as a result of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
The NFT company said that it is set to release a non-fungible token, in which the proceeds will go straight to Women for Afghan Women. This organization provides vocational training and educational assistance to women in the United States and Afghanistan.
The NFT will feature an artwork inspired by American author Louisa May Alcott, which shows half a woman’s face covered by a single butterfly wing with the inspiring quote: “Nothing is impossible to a determined woman.”
Taliban’s takeover
The recent Taliban takeover of Afghanistan wasn’t the first time that the insurgent group has overrun the country. Back in the 1990s, it also took over the country’s government, and almost all women and girls were banned from getting a formal education.
And this situation has repeated again when the Islamist group took over the country right after the U.S. military’s withdrawal.
But Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of Education Zabihullah Mujahidwhile has hinted that the Taliban is currently planning to allow girls and women to get access to education.
Educational opportunities
“This is a generation that grew up hopeful and dreaming about their future through educational opportunities. We are committed to serving Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and Afghan refugees arriving in the U.S.,” Naheed Samadi Bahram, Women for Afghan Women’s U.S. country director, said.
Bookblocks.io has announced that 100% of the NFT proceeds will go to the organization to help them extend a hand on Afghan girls and women who are currently in desperate need.
Some 2,200 copies are planned to be minted by the company, which also serves as a reminder for the 2.2 million Afghan girls who are currently unable to get access to education in the country.
