Senator Pat Toomey, a member of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, is pressuring Office of the Comptroller (OCC) nominee Saule Omarova to release her 1989 university honors Marxism thesis.
U.S. President Joe Biden has formally nominated Saule Omarova as the country’s new comptroller of the currency. She is a Khazak-born attorney and is widely known as critical to both banks and cryptos.
Toomey said that he wants to see Omarova’s previous thesis to see if she possesses Marxism views that might affect her decisions in the OCC. Omarova resided in the United States in 1991 and previously served as an advisor to George W. Bush.
Is Omarova a Marxist?
The Senator claimed that Omarova intentionally deleted a reference to her thesis titled “Karl Marx’s Economic Analysis and the Theory of Revolution in the Capital” from her current resume with Cornell Law School.
An archived resume also suggests that the paper was written as part of Omarova’s diploma with honors in philosophy. Toomey said that it is highly important to see this thesis to see if Omarova is fit to get the OCC post.
He added that the Committee on Banking and Urban Affairs considers her thesis as an important part of determining her qualification as the new Comptroller. And without it, the Committee cannot possibly get a clear idea if she is indeed a believer of Marxist views.
Criticisms on Omarova nomination
Biden has received criticisms over his nomination of Omarova at OCC, and critics said that putting her as the country’s Comptroller poses a lot of risks given her critical stance on the banking and cryptosystem.
But Democrats, especially Senator Elizabeth Warren, agree with the President’s nomination. Warren described Omarova as an “excellent choice,” saying that she is perfectly fit to oversee the nation’s banking system.
