Ubisoft recently showcased the upcoming Prince of Persia Remake. The game had “weird” graphical issues, prompting Ubisoft India to address these concerns.
When the Prince of Persia Remake trailer showed up, fans have underwhelming comments on it. The landmark 2003 game had questionable graphics unfit for today’s next-gen standard. Ubisoft India responded extensively about their stylistic choices.
Weird graphics for Sands of Time Remake is intended
According to an interview, game director Pierre Sylvain-Gires notes the visual aesthetic is part of their intention. Sylvain-Gires details that they want the game to stand out as a remake worthy of the Prince of Persia name.
“If you take the game that was made 17 years ago, there’s definitely room for improvement in terms of graphism and we really wanted to give a unique look to the game because Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is actually is a fantasy story,” says the game director.
“The narration, the 40 different levels you have to go through to finish the game are an immersion into the Thief of Baghdad and all these magical environments. So we decided to go for a unique visual treatment to make this game standout from other games. It’s not another Assassin’s Creed, it’s not like the same Prince of Persia from 2008. It has to be unique. This magic, this fantasy is shown through the saturation, through the light, so it also a challenge to redefine the visual identity of the game with this remake.”
Prince of Persia trailer has a ton of graphical fidelity issues
Ubisoft India can claim that the Prince of Persia Remake is a stylistic choice. Even then, it’s easy to see that the trailer is shoddy. Some eagle-eyed fans even found many texture load issues and bad animations.
The trailer has a ton of missing assets too. Some textures didn’t load, characters have obvious clones, and the environment glitched. When pressed further, Ubisoft India notes it’s not about budget or time.
“No it was not a problem of timeline or budget,” said Syed Abbas, the game’s Deputy Managing Director. “For us at Ubisoft quality is of the utmost importance and this is something that we have kept in mind from the start. The project has been in development for the last two and a half years. We have had at peak 170 members working on this project and not to mention other investments in infrastructure and set up to make a modern game. No there have not been any cutback in budget or timeline for the game.”
Ubisoft India still has four months to correct all the graphical issues that the Prince of Persia Remake has. Whether they listen or barrel through will make or break their game.
