'Uncut Gems' starring Adam Sandler is now on Netflix; Is it true story?

Uncut Gems may be a December 2019 movie but it’s still making some noise even up to now. The movie just dropped on Netflix and now more people are talking about it.

Uncut Gems is a crime-thriller film starring Adam Sandler. He plays the role of a New York City jeweler named Howard Ratner.

He has a gambling addiction and in the story, he risked it all on a rare stone, Kevin Garnett, and a 2012 Celtics game.

It’s almost 6 months since the movie was released in theaters but it’s now made relevant again after it was made available to stream on Netflix in the US.

According to The Verge, the movie was considered one of 2019’s best films by a number of critics. It also paved a way for the brothers and directors Josh and Benny Safdie to be called as the most ambitious filmmakers working today.

The film showed its viewers an intimate look into a very specific world. And because it’s exceptionally made, some people think it’s a true story.

What is true and what is fictional?

Some people assumed the story of Uncut Gems is based on a true story. It’s understandable though since the Safdie brothers meticulously researched and recreated the world of Howard.

However, there are some parts in the movie that are based on real events. As detailed on Decider, the “true story” event is the basketball game that Howard bets on.

It’s a real game of the Celtics vs. 76ers, the last game of the 2012 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals which happened on May 26, 2012.

Howard’s bet on the basketball game is all based on real rebounds, points, and other details of that game.

Casting Kevin Garnett

Another fact in the movie is the casting of Kevin Garnett who plays as himself. He is a former power forward for Boston Celtics.

It was revealed in the film’s DVD featurette that the Safdies were determined to find and cast a real NBA player who could play themselves.

The truth was that they initially chose Joel Embiid and they were originally planning to set the timeline on the present-day. But due to schedule changes in their shooting, they had to make changes.

The shoot got moved to the fall so Josh said that they crossed off casting an active player.

Uncut Gems also stars Julia Fox, Idina Menzel, The Weeknd, Lakeith Stanfield, Eric Bogosian, Keith Williams Richards, Pom Klementeiff, among others.
