The Exynos 990 chipset is highly criticized for its performance and efficiency. The chipset failed to upset the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Nevertheless, many believe that the new Exynos chipset will have new upgrades to make it better.
Many tech insiders refer to the new Exynos chipset as the Plus upgrade. This is fairly common in the community. Chipset manufacturers usually release a base model, and then release an updated version of it months later.
With a clear competition in the market, Samsung is rumored to have been working heavily on the new Exynos chipset. The new chipset will be more powerful and efficient compared to its base model. Word around the community is that Samsung optimized the chipset and fixed some of its weaknesses.
It is important to note that Exynos 990 did not fare well with even the least powerful chipsets in its rank. In one test, the Galaxy S20 Plus with an Exynos chip succumbs to the lower-tiered Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro.
Many tech experts have noted that the problem with the Exynos chipset is its optimization. Since the chipset is developed in-house, developers do not have hardware access to it. Unlike Qualcomm chipsets that are readily available to developers, the Exynos chipset is relatively locked.
The rumor is that Samsung is having a hard time optimizing its 5nm chipsets. This is a huge problem since the 5nm Exynos chipset will power the company’s upcoming flagship Galaxy Note 20 series. This spells a lot of trouble for Samsung if the company is unable to fully optimize its own flagship chipset.
Word around the community is that Samsung has a lot of upgrades and optimizations in the works. The biggest question now is whether the Plus version of the Exynos will fare well with the Snapdragon 865 Plus.
The Snapdragon 865 Plus is expected to be at the heart of some of the flagship devices this year. Samsung is facing a huge challenge if its flagship Exynos chipset cannot keep in par in performance and efficiency
Rumors claim that Samsung will stick with the Exynos 990 for its next generation of flagship devices. If the chipset is not up to the challenge, Samsung still has the option to use Snapdragon chipsets. However, a lot is at stake here for the Exynos chipset, and Samsung should make sure that it delivers.
