The new travel measures in the United States (US) will take effect from November 8.
The travel ban in the United States (US) emerged under the Trump presidency. The new administration extended the measures this year.
It has since grown to include many countries across the globe. The rule bans most visitors from various nations, including the United Kingdom, China, Ireland, and much of Europe.
Officials have remained strict about the travel restrictions. This is despite the opposition of many governments and institutions.
In addition, several travel companies, airlines, and hotels have urged the U.S. government for more than a year to lift the ban. But, it was only recently when the White House announced its plan to open the country’s borders, and observe new rules.
On Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden issued new travel measures for international travellers. BBC reported that it mainly involves a requirement that almost all foreign visitors be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Measures from the White House
In the proclamation, it says that all travellers must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination before boarding flights to the United States (US). It also notes that airlines should check and confirm the validity of the proof.
It should come from an “official source,” and must have been received by the traveller at least two weeks before the flight. As for the brand of the vaccines, any of the approved jabs by U.S. health regulators will be accepted.
Meanwhile, unvaccinated individuals, including Americans, must show a negative COVID-19 test before the flight. It should be taken within one day of departure.
Exemptions, and other details of the new travel rules in the United States (US)
CNBC stated that the new travel measures in the United States (US) will apply to all foreign visitors, including even travellers from countries that were not on the prohibited list. Nevertheless, there are few exemptions, which apply to some groups of individuals.
As explained, the new travel measures do not cover travellers under the age of 18. But, they should still have a negative COVID-19 test, which must be taken within three days of departure.
The exemptions also apply to individuals who cannot take the COVID-19 vaccines due to medical reasons. The same is also true for travellers on non-tourist visas, and are coming from countries with low vaccine supply.
Officials clarified, however, that exempted individuals due to low vaccine availability must provide a letter from the government of the United States (US), indicating the “urgent need” for travel to the country. There are reportedly 50 countries across the globe that would fit the bill.
