Warner Brothers’ ‘Dune’ won’t come to the big screen until late 2021

The sci-fi fantasy movie, Dune will not arrive this year as scheduled. Instead, Warner Bros. has set the release date to late 2021.

The movie is based on the 1965 iconic novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. The novel was adapted into a movie in 1984 and miniseries in 2000. Furthermore, the novel takes the lead as one of the best-selling sci-fi novels for years. Now, Dune is coming back to the big screen with some of Hollywood’s popular celebrities, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac,  and Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, and Oscar winner Javier Bardem.

What is “Dune” all about?

The story follows the Atreides family as they try to survive on a new hostile planet. They rule the ocean planet Calada. However, the emperor sends the family to a dangerous desert planet, Arrakis. Once the family relocates to Arrakis, they take over the mining of melange. The melange is a mysterious substance that improves cognitive abilities and extends human life.

While the family seems to adjust to desert life, they did not know that it is also a home to giant monstrous sandworms. Furthermore, the Atreides family encounters problems after being betrayed by one of their own. The young son, Paul, and his mother, Jessica, will have to survive on their own.

Warner Bros. delays the release date to 2021

While the movie is originally scheduled for December 2020 release, Warner Bros. decides to move the date to 2021. The delay came after Warner Bros. decided to release Wonder Woman 1984 for Christmas day.

Moreover, the delay has been reinforced by the decision of Regal and Cineworld to close down all its theatres in the US and UK. On top of that, the coronavirus is still the biggest reason why the film industries have shut down most of its productions.

Dune is not the only one to delay its release. The upcoming James Bond film No Time To Die will arrive on April 2021. Besides, the latest Fast and Furious film will also hit the big screen in May 2021.

The movie director, Denis Villeneuve, is supportive of the decision of Warner Bros. Although the delay is primarily because of the pandemic, both Warner Bros. and Legendary consider the financial gains from the movie.

“Dune” trailer details

The trailer arrived last month, Sept. 9, and it provides a glimpse of what to expect in the movie. Actor Timothee Chalamet, who plays Paul Atreides, relies on his trusted allies to defeat his enemies.
