The Galaxy S20 FE aims to offer much of what you’ll find in Samsung’s flagship phones, but with a few tweaks here and there to keep the price down to $699 only.
Samsung has already released three different kinds of Galaxy S20 phones: a regular, a Plus, and an Ultra. And just this week, the tech giant added a fourth to its lineup, the Galaxy S20 FE “Fan Edition”.
Following Wednesday’s announcement of the budget-friendly Samsung phone, US carriers have announced pricing and availability for the new Galaxy S20 FE. As the tech giant has confirmed, we can expect to see more “Fan Edition” phones in the future.
Is the Galaxy S20 FE worth the price?
Before determining if the Galaxy S20 FE is worth the price, let us dig into what it can offer first.
Samsung’s new S20 family member has a 6.5-inch display. Just the right size, which sits between the Galaxy S20 and the S20 Plus.
Like those phones, the FE has a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother animations and graphics. However, the screen of the Galaxy S20 FE is entirely flat and can’t be cranked up to a Quad HD+ resolution.
The back of it is plastic, but if it’s anything like the Note 20’s plastic, it’ll probably feel alright. Samsung is getting extra in marketing the color choices of the FE variant. There’s red, orange, lavender, mint, and white. All of those colors are prefixed with “cloud,” the company’s indication that they have a matte finish that should hide fingerprints.
The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition has a 4,500mAh battery, 6GB of RAM, and IP68 water resistance. It is also compatible with wireless charging and has the capacity to expand storage.
The FE also loses out on having Samsung’s higher-megapixel rear camera options but boasts a Snapdragon 865 processor. Its main rear sensor is 12 megapixels with OIS, plus there’s a 12-megapixel ultrawide and an 8-megapixel telephoto.
For all the features and specs discussed, we can say that buying the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is worth it. With just $699 in price, you can get a smartphone that can give you the same highlights the company’s main flagship can offer.
Are we seeing more “fan edition” phones?
As reported by The Verge, the Galaxy S20 FE is not in Samsung’s plans. The company just wanted to release the original S20 lineup.
But then the pandemic hit. The Galaxy event was one of the last that many tech journalists attended. Not long after the March event, the Korean company decided to make this phone.
The fan edition variant is probably the first smartphone we’ve seen as a direct response to the worldwide health problem. Specifically, Samsung wanted to target a lower price point but hung on to the premium S brand that does better in the US.
Therefore, it is still possible that we might see an FE edition in the future.
