Why the campaign of ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ will be much shorter than ‘The Witcher 3’

CD Projekt Red has a major game coming up, and it’s none other than the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077. The developers have been revealing great things about this upcoming game, and fans couldn’t be more excited.

CD Projekt Red is hard-pressed on the development of Cyberpunk 2077 currently, and the developer is most likely doing the finishing touches. Through the Night City Wire streams and interviews, the developers have been revealing more about the upcoming title. There’s one reveal that might not sit well with everyone.

Devs talk about game length

CD Projekt Red’s Patrick K. Milles says that the game’s main campaign will be shorter than that of The Witcher 3’s. This may come as a surprise to fans, but the developer has a few solid explanations as to why this is the case.

“The difference between a completionist run and a main story run… we do know that the main story run in Cyberpunk 2077 is slightly shorter than The Witcher 3 because we got a lot of complaints about Witcher 3’s main story just being too long. Looking at the metrics, you see tremendous numbers of people played through that game really far, but never made it to the end. We want you to see the full story, so we did shorten the main story, but we have lots to do, and in terms of a completionist campaign, I just don’t have that number,” says Milles.

How long is The Witcher 3?

The Witcher 3’s main campaign can take over 60 hours to beat. If players want to complete the game and its DLCs, it will take up to 150 hours. Some fans think that the shorter base campaign of Cyberpunk 2077 will do the game well.

It will ensure that players can get through the entire experience without being burned out. So long as the developers have a solid plan for the game’s endgame content, then the shorter campaign will be okay.

The usual campaign length for today’s games is 30 hours or lower. If CD Projekt Red wants the perfect balance, then they should go for 40. Fans would rather have a quick campaign than a padded story after all.

Cyberpunk 2077 launches for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this Nov. 19. New-gen versions are expected to arrive next year, and they will be free to those that have the current-gen versions of the game. There will be another Night City Wire stream most possibly next month.
