Warner Bros. has submitted the DC superhero flick Wonder Woman 1984 for consideration in the 2021 Oscars in all the major categories.
According to Comicbook, Wonder Woman 1984 is submitted for the 93rd Academy Awards in all the categories, including Best Picture. Moreover, it’s also eyeing a Best Actress nod for Gal Gadot, who played Diana’s lead character.
However, the latest submission comes amid poor reactions from both critics as well as moviegoers.
“Wonder Woman 1984”: Not up to the mark in ratings
On Rotten Tomatoes, Wonder Woman 1984 has become a rotten entry from the DCEU. It’s gone below the mark of 60 percent. On the other hand, its predecessor, from 2017, stands on top of the rating list. In terms of DC Extended Universe films so far, the original installment has the best score. The sequel, however, is no longer a Certified Fresh release!
On CinemaScore, those who went to watch it on Christmas Day gave a rating of “B+.”
And now, just two weeks after its HBO Max and the theatrical debut, Warner Bros. has submitted it for 2021 Oscars.
Here’s what the official “For Your Consideration” campaign from the studio reads:
Warners asks Academy members to consider nominating WW84 for Best Picture on behalf of several nominees, including producers Deborah and Zack Snyder, Best Director for Jenkins, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jenkins, Geoff Johns, and Dave Callaham.
Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen are also there for Best Supporting Actress nominations in acting categories. Chris Pine and Pedro Pascal are in for consideration in the Best Supporting Actor section.
Other notable people from the film sent for nominations are Matthew Jensen, ASC (Best Cinematography); Richard Pearson, ACE (Best Editing); Lindy Hemming (Best Costume Design); and Hans Zimmer (Best Score).
In history, only two superhero flicks have won an Oscar for Best Score. Black Panther‘s Ludwig Göransson won it in 2019, while Joker‘s composer Hildur Guðnadóttir won last year. In fact, DC’s Joker was also the first film to win in the Best Actor category, with Joaquin Phoenix making history.
Upcoming DCEU installments
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. is also busy right now with its plans of expanding the DC Extended Universe. With the likes of future projects like The Flash, Shazam 2, and Black Adam, it seems possible. Wonder Woman 3 is already announced by the studio, with Patty Jenkins returning to direct once again. Then there is the Suicide Squad reboot by James Gunn and Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
Snyder Cut of Justice League is also coming soon, this year itself, on HBO Max streaming platform.
Coming back to Wonder Woman 1984 and its chances of going further in Oscars, they look quite weak. Because the way it has received disappointing reactions so far will hamper its possibilities of advancing among other strong contenders.
