While other high-profile figures in the field of sports have celebrated their success in their NFT venture, one wrestler was not happy about the results of his first NFT collection.
WWE superstar John Cena said that his World Wrestling Entertainment NFTs produced disappointing results. In fact, it was so disappointing that he even called his first NFT venture a “catastrophic failure.”
According to Cena, fans have only purchased 7.4% of his WWE NFTs which, compared to the sales made by other athletes, is certainly very low.
A mistake
The wrestler attended the Florida Supercon 2021, and spoke about his NFT venture, and said that it was a mistake to market WWE NFTs as part of his physical collectible package.
This package comes with an autographed picture, a shirt, hat, towel, belt, and his NFTs. WWE offered 500 gold tier packages with the NFT for $1,000, but unfortunately, only a fraction of these digital assets have been sold. Only 37 NFTs were purchased by his fans.
“I talk a lot about failure ー this idea failed. Myself and the folks in the WWE thought $1,000 was a fair price point. We were wrong. We were absolutely wrong,” Cena said.
Two tiers
WWE and the wrestler have released two tiers of NFTs. First is the 24-hour auction of a “John Cena Platinum NFT” and second is the 500 limited edition NFT as part of the aforementioned package of physical collectibles the following day.
One interesting fact about John Cena with regards to NFTs is that long before cryptocurrencies and NFTs became a craze, he was already a fan and advocate of digital assets.
Before 2017, when Bitcoin was still at $4,000s, he tweeted an image of the physical coin, expressing his support for the crypto.
