AirPods can now be enjoyed for a longer period with the iOS 14’s optimized battery charging feature.
WWDC 2020 is already on its third day. The features of the new operating systems are further fleshed out during this time. The key highlight on the first day of WWDC 2020 focused on enhancing the user experience in the iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
All three operating systems now offer a cleaner and sleeker command of apps and tasks. iPad and iPhone users now have widgets and lighter weight notifications that appear in drop-down cards. However, the keynote did not cover all features of the operating systems. Another key upgrade on iOS is the battery charging for the AirPods.
iOS 14 optimized battery charging
The main problem that AirPods users face is its short life span. Unfortunately, the batteries on these wireless earphones are soldered, thereby making it impossible to replace them. Also, they are prone to overcharging, which is a common problem for lithium-ion batteries.
Luckily, the iOS 14 upgrade will now fix this problem. The refreshed iOS 14 has an optimized battery charging designed for the AirPods. This simply means that the charging of the AirPods will be controlled by machine learning.
It works in such a way that the AirPods are only charged at a full battery only when they are about to be used. Once they are juiced up at 80%, the charging quickly stops. It only resumes the charging when the machine learns about the usage pattern of the user.
For example, when a user’s habit is to charge the AirPods case before they sleep, iOS 14 cuts the charging when it reaches 80% load. It will only resume a full hour before the user normally wakes up. Having this feature is useful for heavy users of the AirPods as the problem of overcharging is solved.
New spatial recognition feature
Apple also announced another new software upgrade only for the AirPods Pro. The wireless earphones now support surround sound experience while watching movies or series. It is able to this by using a special algorithm that studies the user’s watching patterns.
It uses the built-in gyroscope and accelerometer for the AirPods Pro to follow the user’s movement. The AirPods Pro constantly interacts with the iPad or iPhone to know how the user is set.
The wireless earphones’ spatial recognition feature will work smoothly with any content that is encoded as 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos.
